Which Luxury Cruise Line Is Right for You?

Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Seabourn, Explora Journeys and Crystal all deliver exceptional luxury at sea. But they don't deliver the same kind of luxury. The better question isn't which cruise line is best. It's which one best fits the way you want to travel.

There is no single best luxury cruise line.

One traveller may want almost everything taken care of before leaving home. Another may care more about intimate ships and personal service. Someone else may prefer contemporary design and wellness, while another traveller wants to explore Antarctica without giving up the comforts of luxury travel.

That's why at Stern & Anchor, I wouldn't begin by asking which cruise line you want to sail.

I'd begin with how you like to travel.

How inclusive do you want the experience to be? How important is dining? Traditional elegance or contemporary luxury? Independent exploration or organized excursions? Relaxation or adventure?

Once those answers become clear, the right cruise lines usually become much easier to identify.

The short answer

These aren't rankings. They're starting points.

The itinerary, individual ship, suite, fare structure and your own priorities can all change the recommendation.

Regent Seven Seas: when you want almost everything taken care of

Regent's strongest distinction isn't simply luxury. It's how much of the experience is included.

Its standard cruise fare includes unlimited shore excursions, specialty dining, beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi, valet laundry and 24-hour in-suite dining. Regent also offers an Ultimate All-Inclusive fare that extends the experience with flights, transfers and chauffeur credit.

For the right traveller, that creates something more valuable than a long list of inclusions:

Simplicity.

• You like having much of the vacation arranged and paid for before you leave home.
• You plan to explore regularly ashore.
• You value spacious accommodations and traditional luxury.

Something to know

“Unlimited shore excursions” doesn't mean every possible Regent experience is complimentary. Regent also offers upgraded Regent Choice excursions and other specialized experiences for an additional charge.

Silversea: when luxury and exploration matter equally

Silversea occupies an interesting position in luxury cruising.

It offers the suites, service, dining and refinement expected from an ultra-luxury cruise line, while its destination reach and expedition program give it another dimension.

Its suites include butler service, and its current fares include the core onboard luxury experience. On Classic voyages, the All-Inclusive Plus fare adds a shore-excursion credit. On expedition voyages, expedition activities and landings are included, with additional operational benefits depending on the destination.

For travellers who look at Antarctica or other remote regions and think, I'd love the adventure, but I'm not ready to give up comfort, that combination can be compelling.

Silversea may suit you if:

• Destination depth matters as much as what happens aboard the ship.
• You like highly personalized service.
• Remote and unusual destinations appeal to you.
• You want access to both classic luxury cruising and true expedition experiences.

Something to know

“All-inclusive” doesn't necessarily mean unlimited conventional shore excursions. Silversea's fare structure matters, so it's worth understanding exactly what's included in the voyage you're considering.

Seabourn: when you want your ship to feel more like a yacht

Seabourn's personality is one of its greatest differentiators.

Its ships emphasize an intimate, private-yacht-like atmosphere with ocean-front suites, personalized service, complimentary dining, premium wines and spirits and signature touches such as complimentary caviar.

But the specifications don't fully explain Seabourn.

Its appeal is as much about how the ship feels as what's included in the fare.

Seabourn may suit you if:

• You prefer smaller, more intimate ships.
• You enjoy meeting other well-travelled guests without needing an overly formal environment.
• Personalized service matters more than enormous onboard facilities.
• You appreciate understated luxury.

Something to know

Seabourn isn't simply a conventional luxury cruise line. It also operates purpose-built expedition ships and genuine expedition voyages, including Antarctica.

If expedition cruising is your priority, compare Seabourn's expedition experience directly with alternatives such as Silversea rather than choosing based on brand personality alone.

Explora Journeys: when your idea of luxury is contemporary

Explora Journeys approaches luxury from a different direction.

Rather than recreating traditional cruising at a higher level, it draws heavily from contemporary luxury hospitality, design and wellness.

Its journey fare includes suite accommodation, onboard dining, beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi and, where available, transfers between the port and city centre. Wellness and fitness also play a prominent role in the onboard experience.

That can make Explora particularly interesting to travellers who love luxury hotels but haven't necessarily thought of themselves as “cruise people.”

Explora Journeys may suit you if:

• Modern design matters to you.
• Wellness is part of how you travel.
• You prefer relaxed sophistication over traditional cruise formality.
• You want something closer to a contemporary international resort experience at sea.

Something to know

Destination Experiences aren't generally included in the standard Journey Fare, so don't assume the onboard inclusiveness extends to your activities ashore.

Crystal: when service and dining are central to the experience

Crystal has a distinctive proposition built around highly personalized service, spacious accommodations and a serious culinary identity.

Premium beverages, dining and gratuities form part of the inclusive onboard experience.

Crystal may suit you if:

• Dining is an important part of why you travel.
• You appreciate polished, personalized service.
• You enjoy a sophisticated onboard environment.
• The experience aboard the ship matters every bit as much as the itinerary.

Something to know

Even “all-inclusive” requires reading the details.

Crystal includes complimentary specialty-restaurant reservations based on voyage length. Additional specialty reservations beyond that allowance can carry a charge.

What does “all-inclusive” actually mean on a luxury cruise?

This is where luxury cruise comparisons can become misleading.

Two cruise lines can both describe their experience as all-inclusive while including very different things.

Regent includes unlimited shore excursions from a large catalogue, although upgraded Regent Choice experiences carry supplementary charges.

Silversea includes its core luxury onboard experience across its current fares, while its All-Inclusive Plus fare on Classic voyages adds a shore-excursion credit.

Explora includes an extensive onboard experience but generally treats Destination Experiences separately.

Crystal includes a substantial onboard offering while applying limits to complimentary specialty-restaurant reservations.

So don't ask only:

Is this cruise all-inclusive?

Ask:

What's included in the way I personally travel?

If you rarely drink but want an excursion in every port, your calculation is very different from someone who explores independently but places tremendous value on dining, wine and onboard service.

That's why comparing headline fares alone can be surprisingly misleading.

Traditional luxury or contemporary luxury?

Luxury isn't a single aesthetic.

Some travellers love polished service, maritime traditions and the feeling of participating in a great tradition of ocean travel.

Others associate luxury with contemporary hotels, wellness, beautiful modern spaces and freedom from formality.

Neither is inherently better.

But choosing the wrong one can make an expensive vacation feel strangely mismatched.

How adventurous do you want your luxury to be?

There's an enormous difference between enjoying Champagne while sailing into Monte Carlo and boarding a Zodiac to explore Antarctica.

Both can be luxury travel.

They're simply different interpretations of it.

If destination immersion and exploration are central to your travel personality, expedition capability and itinerary may matter more than which ship has your favourite restaurant.

If the ship itself is an important part of the destination, the equation changes.

So which luxury cruise line should you choose?

Start with yourself, not the cruise line.

Ask:

• Do I want most things included before I leave home?
• Do I prefer traditional elegance or contemporary luxury?
• How important is dining?
• Do I want an intimate ship or a wider range of facilities?
• How much exploring do I want to do ashore?
• Do remote and adventurous destinations excite me?
• How much do I value having someone else take care of the details?

Your answers will usually narrow the field considerably.

And sometimes the right answer isn't the cruise line you originally expected.

I don't believe there's one luxury cruise line everyone should sail.

There are cruise experiences that fit certain travellers extraordinarily well.

That's why I prefer to begin with how you like to travel: what you value, what you don't care about, where you want to go and what would make the trip memorable for you.

The ship comes after that.

Because when you're investing in a luxury cruise, the goal isn't to book the cruise everyone says is best.

It's to find the one that's right for you.
